Sewage treatment plants are used to remove contaminants from wastewater. They consist of an aeration tank, grit chamber, clarifier, sludge basin, and disinfection system. The process begins when raw sewage enters the plant through a pipe or manhole cover. Raw sewage flows into the aeration tank where it is mixed with air. This causes bacteria to grow and multiply. As they do, oxygen is released into the water. The oxygen then kills the bacteria
